'On that note: I have a special request to the toolmakers of 2004: stop making tools that magnify and multilply awkward social situations ("A total stranger asserts that he is your friend: click here to tell a reassuring lie; click here to break his heart!") ("Someone you don't know very well has invited you to a party: click here to advertise whether or not you'll be there!") ("A 'friend' has exposed your location, down to the meter, on a map of people in his social network, using this keen new location-description protocol -- on the same day that you announced that you were leaving town for a week!"). I don't need more "tools" like that, thank you very much.'
Well, I agree with the "friends" thing (cf. too-long-to-post-here link to thread over in Tribe Ideas viz. terminology). It's an awkward construction. Some of the rest of these ideas is useful for me, some has no bearing on me, some I agree with.

I'm part of the problem :(
Tue, December 23, 2003 - 4:35 PMI now feel horrible for sending Cory a 'friend' request on tribe. I am not really Cory's friend by most (non-tribe) definitions. I'm a great fan of his work and would probably get along with him 'eye are ell,' but it wouldn't have "broken my heart" not to have been added to his 'network' on a social experiment web site. (Wow! That was a lot of quotes.)
I have to say that if I were in Cory's position I would likely empathize with his feelings on "tools" as he describes them. This post calls to mind Neal Stephenson's "Why I Am a Poor Correspondent" from a few years back. His point is pretty easy to understand here.
Maybe for another discussion, but I'm just now wondering where lies the line between fan and fanboy. I'll voraciously read anything Cory writes, and I'll make a point of carrying my Hot Pocket™ to the TV when I know he's scheduled with Pat & Leo. But I'm not particularly interested in knowing which is his favourite breakfast cereal. *shrugs* -

Re: Cory rants on the FuturePresent
Mon, August 23, 2004 - 4:52 PMCory needs to get over himself, if someone sends you a friend request, TAKE THE DAMN COMPLIMENT at least. If you have the time, look over the profile and decide for yourself whether this is someone you wish to associate or be associated with. I understand C has a higher profile now due to his engaging forays into fiction and social commentary, and therefore is more likely to be beset by these, but that doesn't excuse rudeness or laziness. If it's too much trouble for him to follow the same process the rest of us do, then why is he here? -10 whuffie, C.
